IACET’s Symposium REDUX: Open Digital Credentials represents our continued focus on the design, interpretation, and application of digital credentials within the continuing education and training ecosystem. Moving beyond traditional badging models by establishing a direct and intentional connection between learning, assessment, and workforce relevance, REDUX: ODC intends to position digital credentials that represent verified capability and demonstrated performance.
The urgency of this work is driven by the rapid expansion of digital credentials across industries, paired with a lack of consistency in their meaning and value. Employers are often unable to clearly interpret what a credential signifies. Learners face challenges in communicating the relevance of their achievements. Organizations, in turn, lack standardized approaches to quality, evidence, and alignment. Without deliberate design, digital credentials risk becoming symbolic artifacts rather than trusted indicators of skill.
IACET is uniquely positioned to lead this effort by extending its established authority in standards and quality into the digital credentialing space. Through REDUX, IACET connects credential design to the ANSI/IACET Standard, translates global interoperability frameworks into practical application within CE/T, and reinforces the importance of governance, accountability, and continuous improvement. This work is not a departure from IACET’s mission, but a natural evolution of its role as a standards-based leader in learning quality and workforce alignment.
At their strongest, digital credentials serve as verified, portable records of learning that communicate what an individual knows and can do. They include clearly defined learning outcomes tied to competencies, transparent criteria for earning the credential, evidence demonstrating achievement, documented assessment methods, identifiable issuer information, and structured metadata that supports sharing and verification across systems. When designed effectively, they move beyond static recognition and operate as trusted, actionable signals of capability.
